I really enjoyed The Witch Hunter but I found this sequel a little disappointing.

Firstly, it probably would have helped if I reread The Witch Hunter first (which is obviously on me) but it would have been helpful to have little recaps of main plot lines in the beginning chapters. I felt a bit lost and wasn't entirely sure who everyone was. I definitely recommend rereading book one beforehand as it should be a really helpful refresher.

The biggest problem I had with this sequel is that I just wasn't as invested in the plot. There is a lot of action which kept me reading but I wasn't as excited as I was before. I didn't really care for Elizabeth either; it felt like everything she did revolved around her love for John and she didn't come across as feisty as I would have hoped. On the plus side, there were some plot twists which kept the story flowing well and the action levels high. I also didn't understand why Malcolm has had a personality transplant and is now portrayed as someone we should feel sorry for. He is still a rapist and the excuses for him being so (he's not used to people saying no) just don't feel right. I was surprised that Elizabeth was able to move on and accept him as quickly as she did.

Overall, this is a satisfying conclusion to the duology but it lacks the excitement that The Witch Hunter had. The main characters don't particularly stand out but there are some enjoyable supporting characters and plot twists.

  1. Ew, a book that tries to make readers feel sorry for rapists.
