One explores the lives of conjoined twins Grace and Tippi as they attend school for the first time, fall in love and make the toughest decision of their lives: to separate or not. The story is written in verse. It's the first book I have read that is written this way, and I am by no means an expert on poetry, but I thought it worked beautifully.

Grace is our narrator for the duration of the story and she is quiet and sensible compared to her louder and brazen sister. I really liked both sisters and it was interesting to see how they both handle issues separately as well as a team. We learn about the struggles of living as a conjoined twin from both the physical aspects to the emotional ones. They have never quite managed to fit in and have to deal with people staring and making comments. The fact the story is set in America also allows for the financial aspects to be covered. Healthcare isn't free and the family have to make sacrifices. I liked that the problems other family members have were also explored as the twins are not the only ones affected. The romance element isn't overpowering in any way and sheds some light on the potentialities of a relationship.

We are given access to a life that we wouldn't normally be able to experience and it was amazing. I learned a lot about what being a conjoined twin means. Grace and Tippi may be conjoined but one of the biggest messages we can take from One is that they are different people; they are individuals and they can have the same thoughts and feelings that we all do. It's an extremely thought-provoking story that really makes you consider the lives of others and how they are treated for not being "normal". Sarah Crossan has produced a well-researched, thoughtful and sensitive story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

  2. I had no clue this was written in verse, more the reason for me to pick it up! I love reading about twins, especially when they're polar opposites. This sounds like it's going to be amazing, so I can't wait to snatch it up :)

    1. I didn't realise until a little after I got my ARC! I wasn't really sure what to expect as I'm really not a fan of poetry but it definitely worked and didn't even feel like I was reading something in verse (in a good way!) I hope you enjoy it! It's a fascinating story :)
