Anyone can betray anyone
Red Queen takes place in a world where the Reds are commoners living in filthy and poverty-ridden surroundings whilst being ruled by the elite Silvers. Your position, Red or Silver, is determined by which of those two colours your blood is. Mare is on the verge of being sent to war but a chance meeting lands her a job at the Silver palace where she discovers she has a threatening and dangerous power.

Mare isn't a simple or easy to like heroine. She lies and uses people to her own advantage. And yet she is still a heroine you find yourself rooting for. She's a fighter and she's determined to do what she thinks is right even if that means sacrificing others.

I really love a good villain and in Red Queen the villain is constantly changing. You can never quite be sure who to trust and who is on each side. Just as you begin to get attached to someone, they can turn around and betray you. Anyone can betray anyone.

Is there a love triangle? No. There is a love square. Personally I love it. I know there's a whole thing about love triangles (or squares) being boring but I enjoy them when they are executed well. Despite the fact it's a square, the romance is actually a bit of a back burner in this book. It's not thrown in your face, Mare isn't constantly obsessing over a boy and the more important things (like overturning a government) do take precedence.

There are plenty of plot twists in this book that I did not see coming. My emotions and my alliances to particular characters were constantly changing. There is a major struggle for power, plenty of action, betrayal and complex characters. I can't wait to read book two!

    1. Reviews definitely seem to be mixed! I decided I had to read it as soon as I read about it & then the book sat on my shelf for months haha typical! So glad I got to it at last.

I know! Who wants a love triangle when you can have a square right?! LOL I love it.

Oh geeesh. I don't know if I can handle a love square. My emotions will go allll over the place. Props to her for pulling it off though! This is on my to-read list and I want to read it even more now that I've seen this review! Luckily I put myself on the Hold list in my library so I am up to get a copy soon! It's so popular!

  9. I completely agree with what you said! I loved Red Queen and I am so excited for the sequel.
I did not see the plot twist coming, and there were so many twists and turns. Seriously, though, that was one of the best betrayals ever. *mind blown*
