Anyone can betray anyoneRed Queen takes place in a world where the Reds are commoners living in filthy and poverty-ridden surroundings whilst being ruled by the elite Silvers. Your position, Red or Silver, is determined by which of those two colours your blood is. Mare is on the verge of being sent to war but a chance meeting lands her a job at the Silver palace where she discovers she has a threatening and dangerous power.
Mare isn't a simple or easy to like heroine. She lies and uses people to her own advantage. And yet she is still a heroine you find yourself rooting for. She's a fighter and she's determined to do what she thinks is right even if that means sacrificing others.
I really love a good villain and in Red Queen the villain is constantly changing. You can never quite be sure who to trust and who is on each side. Just as you begin to get attached to someone, they can turn around and betray you. Anyone can betray anyone.
Is there a love triangle? No. There is a love square. Personally I love it. I know there's a whole thing about love triangles (or squares) being boring but I enjoy them when they are executed well. Despite the fact it's a square, the romance is actually a bit of a back burner in this book. It's not thrown in your face, Mare isn't constantly obsessing over a boy and the more important things (like overturning a government) do take precedence.
There are plenty of plot twists in this book that I did not see coming. My emotions and my alliances to particular characters were constantly changing. There is a major struggle for power, plenty of action, betrayal and complex characters. I can't wait to read book two!
Great review. This one has been on my TBR list for a long time.

DeleteOOOh nice!! I've read so many mixed reviews, but I already decided on needing to read this. I just need to read my copy now! LOL!. I thought it sounded intriguing! And yay for a new love shape complication! Triangles are sooo lame these days! LOL! Couldn't resist commenting on that! Glad to hear you enjoyed this one! Great review!
ReplyDeleteReviews definitely seem to be mixed! I decided I had to read it as soon as I read about it & then the book sat on my shelf for months haha typical! So glad I got to it at last.
DeleteI know! Who wants a love triangle when you can have a square right?! LOL I love it.
Thank you! :)
Oh, I loved this book! At the end, I was like WHAT? OH MY GOSH. That was a brilliant plot twist!
ReplyDeleteI know! The plot twist totally surprised me. It was a good lesson to not trust any characters!
DeleteI loved this book, too!! Anyone can betray anyone: those words didn't quite hit me until that ultimate betrayal actually happened. Sigh, that one hurt!
ReplyDeleteAhh I know! That betrayal totally took me by surprise. And to think I actually liked that person!

ReplyDeleteOh geeesh. I don't know if I can handle a love square. My emotions will go allll over the place. Props to her for pulling it off though! This is on my to-read list and I want to read it even more now that I've seen this review! Luckily I put myself on the Hold list in my library so I am up to get a copy soon! It's so popular!
Tell me about it! I get the feeling it's going to be explored a lot more in the next book two which is exciting. I hope you get it from the library soon! Waiting on the popular ones to come in is so frustrating sometimes!
DeleteI haven't really seen any real bad reviews for this one. I can't wait to read the copy that I have. Thanks for the review! :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy it! It was definitely worth the wait for me :)
DeleteI completely agree with what you said! I loved Red Queen and I am so excited for the sequel.
ReplyDeleteI did not see the plot twist coming, and there were so many twists and turns. Seriously, though, that was one of the best betrayals ever. *mind blown*
Great review!
