Carrying on the theme from my Throne of Glass review, I'm doing another list review for Crown of Midnight. Behold my random thoughts during the reading process as I ponder revelations, the twists and turns of the love triangle and that ending.

Thoughts Before Reading:
  • I was so impressed with Throne of Glass that I couldn't wait to know more and so I had to jump right into the sequel. I wasn't ready to leave the Throne of Glass world just yet.
  • I've heard from more than one person that this book is so much better and that something big is revealed. I'm excited and I'm already wondering what the reveal is!
Thoughts During Reading: (Be aware, if you haven't read the book, there may be a few spoilers)

  • Celaena is getting used to her role as the king's assassin but is faking deaths. This is going to result in one major fight if he finds out. (Which I want to see because I want Celaena to annihilate him!)
  • Her next mission is to kill someone she knew in her previous life: Archer. I'm looking forward to meeting someone from her past as maybe we'll learn more about her life back then.
  • A talking door knocker! Whaat? I love it.
  • Celaena and Chaol are pretending to be out for tea to "bump into" Archer. Archer is attractive and Chaol is getting jealous. Is Archer going to be another love interest? (Also feeling sorry for Dorian who has been left out and I wish Celaena would let him back in because it is heartbreaking).
  • Ohh more underground tunnels and tombs. I wonder what horrors are going to be uncovered in these ones.
  • Noooo, Dorian, don't let her go! *heart breaks*
  • Dorian has magic within him? Wow. I did not see that one coming. Did Nehemia awaken it in him? This could be very useful for overthrowing the king. (if he doesn't get caught..)
  • Baba Yellowlegs... what a name.
  • My heart is still breaking for Dorian. Why is Celaena saying things that she knows will hurt him? Meanwhile... Chaol, you are just perfect. <3
  • Ooo I think I approve of this development in the romance department. Someone is going to be very, very hurt though. I can't help but think that things aren't going to remain so happy. They aren't, are they?
  • Nehemia is right that something has to be done and I think Celaena knows deep down that she has a big part to play in making things different but is in denial.
  • It's so sad that Dorian and Chaol's friendship is breaking down. :(
  • Well shit is well and truly going down now. Between what's happened regarding Chaol and Nehemia, Celaena is going to create one big shitstorm. Now we are really getting to see Celaena's badass side and I love it. She's ruthless. I'm surprised at the death as I thought this particular character would be instrumental in future storylines. I feel for Chaol who was just doing what he thought was the right thing. I'm hoping that Celaena will see sense but after all the setbacks and lack of trust that she has faced, it's gonna be tough.
  • It's interesting to meet Chaol's father at last. He's cold and only interested in his son now because he can benefit from it. Ugh.
  • Celaena is going to rule Terrasen one day and she's going to be the one to slaughter the king, I just know it.
  • It seems things are almost making a 360 in the romance department. I don't know how to feel!
  • The portals business is creepy and I don't trust Archer at all, I think he has to be dealt with sharpish.
  • Fleetfoot! Chaol! Someone needs to figure out how to shut this portal before something terrible happens. What we have now is a crazy final battle resulting in revelations that only two thirds of the love triangle are aware of and thus creates the beginnings of a major crack between the two friends. Chaol's final decision has just cemented that crack and I don't know how Chaol and Dorian are going to recover from this.
  • That ending... seriously, that ending... What a way to end things! I'm glad I don't have a year to wait between books because that is one serious revelation that has me itching for the next book already. I love that there is still so much more left to be explored.
Overall Impressions:
I loved this book! There is more action than Throne of Glass which I am perfectly happy with. One of my favourite things about this series is that it's not predictable. There are things that I didn't see coming and that's what keeps it so exciting. Some of my thoughts are not as insightful because I was so engrossed in the story and the revelations that I didn't want to stop reading to take proper notes. I'm pretty sure that's a sign of something amazing. Bring on Heir of Fire!

  1. Great review!
It was great to see your thoughts as you were reading. Crown of Midnight is the best <3
I am a total Chaolaena shipper and I loved that we get tons of that in this book.
However, it kind of turns out not very good and GAH. it's frustrating.
My favorite part has to be when Chaol is kidnapped by the rebels and Celaena is just so angry and she goes to the warehouse and pretty much kills everyone. So badass!
I hope you LOVE HoF...I know I did!

I am officially in love with this series and really wish I read them sooner!
Chaol is just so perfect, isn't he? I do have a soft spot for Dorian though! I felt so bad for him.
It is frustrating how things couldn't just stay happy for them! I loved it when Celaena got badass in the warehouse too, I loved getting to see her amazing assassin skills in action!
I can't wait to read HoF! I need to start it asap!
